The aftermath of COVID 19
More people are returning to work
Kids are going back to school after 6 months home
Fall is around the corner,
and things are finally moving in the direction of some form of normalcy…slowly but it’s happening
And MAYBE that urge…
What am I talking about? The urge (need) to make PROGRESS.
It’s a human need and we all have it
It happens when we find ourselves staring the future in the face, without the confidence and excitement to go forward like we experience when the Year is New.
So, if you’re feeling that way now, do you just chalk 2020 up as a loss and wait for 2021?
You can make great strides this year toward your dreams, goals and desires.
I often get asked the question, “How do I start?” or in this case restart?
Here’s a better question to ask, “Where do I start?”
You start with FOCUS
Let’s begin by defining Focus and its benefits, and in subsequent posts we’ll drill down into create results driving focus.
In short, FOCUS is the ability to target your attention and energy
Focus is a super-natural ability that empowers achievement. Thank God it is also a skill we can learn to strengthen.
In a natural sense we focus both unconsciously, with the mind’s Reticular Activating System (RAS) and consciously with intentional decision making.
An example of unconscious focus is when you buy a car and you begin to see that car everywhere, and in your color. Or in an airport you hear your flight number as you buy a coffee, or magazine, which alerts you to rush to your gate. You weren't consciously trying to pay attention to those things.
An example of conscious focus is deciding to buy a specific car, read a book, or watch a specific TV program. You intentionally focus on those things.
But conscious decisions can sometimes backfire, because a conscious decision can give the brain the unconscious authority to take over; like when you decide to watch your favorite Netflix series, and end up binge watching...2 days later you realize you haven’t done anything else.
So, we have the natural ability to target our attention toward, and the skill to consciously concentrate on, a thought, a thing, an interest, or activity.
Focusing also means we, by decision, choose to ignore other things.
By focusing, you free up your ability to do that thing you chose.
But remember, focus can be an unconscious activity also, because the brain can direct your decision making…choosing for you…if you let it. Oftentimes this is where frustration, confusion and feeling scattered comes from. We'll talk about this in a later post.
How can we use this KNOWLEDGE today?
In the beginning I asked you...
Do you want to chalk this year up as a loss and wait for 2021?
Then this knowledge was nice to have until next year ☹
You want your dreams, goals and desires, even if it means tweaking them in the wake of COVID? 😊
Then the first thing you have to do is Focus on WHAT YOU WANT!
If you do this first thing, when it comes to achieving your dreams, goals and desires, you are ahead of 95% of the planet.
Most people know what they don’t want, which is often what they get; because they are focused on it.
My mentor and coach, Tony Robbins says, “Where focus goes energy flows.”
If you know what you don’t want your energy flows in that direction…
If you know what you do want your energy flows in that direction…
When you narrow your focus to that one thing you want you can make PROGRESS:

So, let’s learn a technique to make a conscious decision on what things you will ignore so your energy will flow in the direction of what you want.
I read an article that said; Focus can only occur when we have said yes to one option and no to all other options. In other words, elimination is a prerequisite for focus. As Tim Ferriss says, “What you don’t do determines what you can do.”
If you don’t have one, buy a bound journal today—one where the pages do not come out.
1. In that journal draw a vertical line down the middle of 1 page.
2. Look at this journal page everyday this week and decide which goal…dream…vision…thing is the least important to you. The item you can most do without. Then line through it...virtually eliminating from your list…do not eliminate more than one item per day.
What is this doing for you? It’s training you target your desire into ONE thing you really want, and strengthening your focus on to that ONE thing.
By Friday or Saturday, you will have chosen the 1 thing you deeply desire. The one thing you want to happen by the end of the YEAR. Then put that away until next Monday where we'll move to the next step on accomplishing it.
